Finish with the Best

State College, Pennsylvania - The Saratoga Sparks packed their bags and shuffled off to State College Pennsylvania this past week to compete in the USA Invitational on the campus of Penn State University. The Sparks have been working towards this tournament all season placing a strong emphasis on achieving two team goals. The first, win the opening round game which would allow the Sparks to play through the winners bracket. Winning the first game would guarantee the Sparks the opportunity to play the top teams in the tournament.

The second goal was just to be competitive from that point forward. “We have worked hard this season and we feel that the players all realize their own strengths and weaknesses as a team and as individuals. We are looking at this tournament as sort of a final exam. The best way to pass it is to prove that we are a better team than the one that started the season in Sturbridge, and to see if we have improved individually” shared Coach Turner.

The Sparks took the court for the first game at 7:40pm at the Penn State Recreation Center. Their opponent was a team for York Pennsylvania called the Red Lion Flash. As the Sparks warmed up you could sense that this was not just another AAU basketball game. It was something more. Every player seemed focused and unusually quiet as they ran through their warm-up drills.

The game soon started and the Sparks were off and running. Their focus and determination could be seen from the start of the game right through to the end. Each player contributed hustle and spirit as the game slowly turned from a small Sparks lead to an insurmountable advantage.

Allison “Black Cloud” Setter scored a team high thirteen points while teammates Andrea “Lunch Pail” Mangione and Marissa “Sugar” Ray each scored nine to led the Sparks to convincing 57-21 victory.

The margin of victory was the largest of the Sparks season since their twenty-seven-point victory over the Connecticut Storm.

The Sparks shot an impressive 48% from the field on 24 of 50 shooting but only shot 43% from the foul line hitting only 9 of 21 free throws.

Gabby “Prime Time” Clemente, Megan “Jolly” Rogers and Elisa “Big-E” Hannan each grabbed six rebounds to led the Sparks on the backboards while Alexa “A-Train” Guy and “Nails” Mangione each pocketed five steals.

The victory was huge in many ways for the Sparks. Now they would be placed in the USA Invitational “Winners Bracket” where they would be playing only the top teams in the tournament. They also proved to themselves that winning in this tournament is possible if you’re focused and ready to compete.
